Student Planners

Student planners are an essential part of your student's day here at EMS. Students were given their planner at the beginning of the year and are expected to have it with them at all times.

For students who have misplaced or lost their planner, we have ordered an additional shipment that is expected to arrive by the end of January. At that time, students needing a new planner can purchase one in the EMS Front Office for $4.

Checkpoint Badges

Throughout the school year, students are assessed with a checkpoint assessment at three different times to ensure they are meeting state standards being taught in math and English classes. These assessments replace the NWEA assessments students have taken in years past and, on average, take 30 to 45 minutes for students to complete. Students who receive a proficient or above proficient score are performing at or above grade level, whereas students with a below or approaching proficiency score may be performing below grade level.

We know that some students may need additional reteaching or time exposed to the material to show mastery, so we are providing students a retesting opportunity throughout this month to show growth from checkpoints 1 and 2 which were given last semester. You can see the different ways that we are positively recognizing students who have met or exceeded expectations below. You can find this page taped to the inside front cover of their student planner. Students will take checkpoint 3 assessments in February and will have the opportunity for retesting in March.

We will send home your student's checkpoint data with their quarter 3 report card in March. Do not hesitate to reach out to your student's Homeroom, Math, Language Arts teacher with questions.

Panther Passes

Panther Passes

Last week, I met with each grade level to review expectations for the second semester of the school year. Part of that discussion centered around Panther Passes, which students now have taped on the back inside cover of their planner. These 20 passes can be used for student emergencies that require a student to step out of the classroom during class throughout the semester, with teacher permission. Students are responsible for their planner, which includes their Panther Passes, and for tracking how many passes they have used weekly in their homeroom folder. Students needing to use a Panther Pass without any left may be subject to a referral for being unprepared for class, as we believe 20 passes allows students plenty of opportunity to tend to any needs that may arise during their day. Our goal is that Panther Passes will increase student responsibility and engagement, lessen student anxiety, and create more consistent student expectations throughout our building!
